A beautiful example of Braque?s use of glowing but translucent colour linked to his famous theme of the soaring birds. The birds in a gleaming white and deep black are set against brushed textural areas of yellow (the sunlight), pink (the evening) and grey (the twilight).
The bird is one of the most important themes of the later period of Braque?s art. Its rhythmic form and symbolization of movement were used to evoke the concept of the spiritual freedom of man?s intellect. In the period after the War a principal focus of his art was the desire to express the rejuvenation, creativity and progress which were possibly through the freedom of the mind and the spirit.
Résurrection de l?Oiseau is one of the most renowned groups of prints which Braque drew on the theme of the bird. This composition, the most famous in the group, was used in cut-down form as the cover of the Résurrection album, and also exists in a signed edition (see above). This impression is one of perhaps 20 proofs before the edition which were unsigned. |
