In his prints, as in his drawings, Moore was constantly seeking to use the two-dimensions of line and paper surface to evoke the three dimensions of sculpture. He saw the limitations of the medium not as a deterrent to the creation of sculptural form but as a discipline which enabled him as the artist, and us as the viewer, to understand the concept of space in a different way. Thus there is always a sense of changing viewpoint in his drawings and prints. Through the device of multiple studies he encourages us to see - and imagine - the facets and surfaces of the form that he has created but which are not directly presented to us. It is this sense of discovery, of moving around a sculpture, which makes his prints so interesting and so personal.
This etching, in a proof dedicated to his printer, is absolutely typical of the way that he treated this concept at the end of the 1960?s. |
