As in ?Spirale?, in the four colour etchings for the series ?Nous Avons? Miró showed works at its very finest his jewel-like use of colour and texture in small-scale. The impression illustrated above is one of two or three trial proofs (which all remained unsigned) before the issued editions, and its provenance is directly from the archives of Louis Broder who published the prints in 1959.

The four etchings which comprise the ?Nous Avons? series, their imagery inspired by the poetry of René Char, are amongst the great work of Miró?s small scale graphic oeuvre from the period of the first decade after the War. They are renowned for their inventive textures and rich colour. They also mark the period in Miró?s art when he was profoundly interested in images taken from celestial forms. Through the qualities of surface, and range of differing bite and texture, which he developed in the studio of the master printer Dutrou at this date, he discovered a way in which he could create differing planes within the composition, so that the forms seem at times to float one above the other and at times to merge. This sense of mutilevels is one quality which gives works like the ?Nous Avons? subjects such a unique atmosphere.
