?La Sorgue? was one of a series of lithographs on which Braque worked in the years between 1958 and 1963 inspired by the poem ?Lettera Amorosa? written by his close friend René Char. In creating the series Char would sit in Braque?s studio reading the words of the poetry and Braque would make notes and sketches. After many months of work, refining and retouching his ideas, he finished the series in the very last period of his life, writing at the time that he felt it was amongst the finest achievements of his career in lithography.

?La Sorgue? refers in its title both to the wild flower and to a favourite river and surrounding landscape. In the soft patterns of the petal and bird shapes, drawn in brush, chalk and liquid washes with quiet tones of yellow, grey and beige-brown, Braque created an image which expresses much of the lyric calm and inner peace which mark the emotional satisfaction of the last period of his life.
