The central theme of Arp?s art was his concept of the way in which the stimulation of emotion could be linked to the visual ?experience? provided by anthropomorphic form. The passage of the eye over the flowing curves and surfaces of shapes derived from the most basis elements of nature could create a subconscious emotional reaction. It is this emphasis on the role of the subconscious which links Arp, and the ideas of the Dada circle, to the Surrealists.
In ?Coulisses de Foret? Arp used shapes with a basis both in the primeval amoeba-like roots of man?s development and in the elements of natural landscape. The interplay of these forms, together with the extremely sensitive balance of the tone values of the colours - blue-grey, soft green - creates a poetic quality of inner peace. |
