Utrillo had a wonderful ability to express the atmosphere of his beloved Montmartre through his free but still carefully structured line. He used the shapes of the buildings, strong perspective, and above all the familiar form of the dome of the Sacré Coeur, to portray the unique character of this part of Paris.

This study was dawn in the late period of his life as part of a set of lithographs depicting his favourite areas of Paris. The editions of the lithographs in the series were all issued unsigned. This proof is extremely unusual in being pencil signed; it was signed by Utrillo for one of the studio assistants at the Mourlot Studio where he drew it.
