The group of compositions which Severini made in 1930 under the title ?Fleurs et Masques? working in pochoir are some of the most exciting works in their genre from the whole period of that period. The marvellous use of colour, the treatment of the compositional arrangement of the forms, and the quality of spatial solidity which the opacity of the stencil inks enabled him to create, give this images a presence and at the same time a sense of mystical atmosphere which is unique.
Severini had been one of the founders of the Italian Futurist movement, together with Balla. In about 1906 he went to Paris and became a part of the circle both around Modigliani and of the Section d?Or, the fountainhead of the development of later Cubism with such painters as Gris and Marcousssis. After the War this emphasis on hard form gave place to a more lyrical and more intellectual classical inspiration. It was at this date that he met up with Carra and De Chirico to establish Valori Plastici. In many ways the images of the Fleurs et Masques series, such as ?Paysage et Nature Morte? above are a perfect expression of this blend of classical imagery, defined plane and form, and intellectual mystery.
