A rare an extremely interesting and exciting group of colour lithographs dating from one of the most creative and yet infrequently seen periods of Italian modern art in the years just following the War.

Santomaso was influenced early in his life by Van Gogh (which instilled into him a brilliance of colour which he never abandoned) and by the late cubism of Braque, but it was in many ways the emotional qualities of surrealism as found in De Chirico which were most important. Just at the end of the War he linked up with other Italian avant-garde painters like Birolli, to form the ?New Italian Secession - Nuova Secessione Italiana?. In the first years of the 1950?s his work became increasingly ?gestural? (he had a strong admiration for Hartung), and it is at this period that his own ideas reached a peak.

Creative work in lithography in Italy at this date was restricted to a small number of enlightened studios, but, as in this case, there were some really unusual and inventive works being made. This group of prints (particularly scarce as a complete set) is an extremely fine and rare example of this period and shows Santomaso at his most creative.
