Charles Jacque was one of the most gifted of all the French etchers of the Barbizon School, that group of painters who, inspired by Corot and Rousseau, settled in and around the village of Barbizon in the Forest of Fontainebleau in the 1840?s so as to concentrate on themes of realist open-air landscape. Their concentration on capturing the true naturalism of the countryside was to pave the way for the whole concept of Impressionism.

With Daubigny Jacque was probably the most significant etcher of the Barbizon circle. He had a superb sense of the way to express the sensations and atmosphere of the open-air through the inherent characteristics of his medium. The 'Storm Landscape?, above, is an extraordinary and absolutely outstanding example of the total creativity of his printmaking. Working on the soft metal of an old daguerreotype photographic plate he created the image with rapid sweeping strokes of the drypoint. The strength and power of the strokes threw up strong textural burr, and he used this to hold deep tones of ink so as to express both the power of the storm wind and the drama of the light. Drypoint worked in this way can only print a very few impressions. Only six proofs are known of this work, with no issued edition.
