An outstandingly fine example of Toulouse-Laurec?s incomparable drawing style. Dating from the period of the height of his powers the use of the line, the way each curl and stroke, each nuance of shading and emphasis, is used to express the character of his subject shows him at his most inspired. At his period he was able to use the chalk tocombine visual description, humour and the expression of inner character in a way which was unmatched by any other artist in his genre of ?social reportage?.
Not much is known about the subject of this study except that it is believed that she was a model or errand girl for a milliner. Most likely Lautrec merely saw her in a shop or in the street and was captivated by her combination of elegance, style and pert humour.
This lithograph is very rare; the edition was only 25 impressions and very few examples indeed have appeared on the market in recent times. This impression is of excellent quality but the original very large margin sheet edges have been trimmed (leaving the image and inner margins fully intact) probably to aid framing at some point n the distant past. |
