A beautiful, and very amusing example of Legrand?s work in colour etching. The combination of Legrand?s marvellously descriptive use of line and sparkling sharp colours makes such works as this particularly appealing.

Legrand was one of the most gifted printmakers amongst the group of turn-of-the-century Parisian ?artist-reporters? - those painters who found their inspiration in observing the lifestyle, social mannerisms and character of street and cafe society. He was a draughtsman who had a particular genius for capturing the atmosphere of the scenes, and a keen and often incisive sense of humour in his manner of portraying them. To this he linked real inspiration as a printmaker. He knew instinctively how combinations of line and tone would support and enhance the actual theme of his drawing. Most of his printmaking was in monochrome but his few colour etchings are an especially attractive aspect of his art.
