In the last decade of his career Miro reverted in his style of drawing, and in his lithographs, to a combination of strokes in a broad greasy richly coloured chalk linked to areas of flat brush stroke. It was a style that he had used, in a slightly different form, in the late 1950?s and early ?60?s, and it reflects his renewed enthusiasm for a lighter and more freely-moving imagery. It is typical of his constant enthusiasm for printmaking as a creative medium that he should have continued look for new styles of expression.
The best known series of Miro?s lithography in this late period is the group of works that he drew under the title of ?Album 21?. The study above is typical of the best of these works. It has the strong vibrant use of colour and the quality of constant movement which are the elements which make these works so very visually appealing. |
