Like Forain Gromaire was an artist who was totally individual in his approach to style and form. Influenced in his youth by the ideas of both Fauvism and of Cubism it was in the period just after the First War that he developed his very personal handling. The stylised, angular shapes have a powerful plasticity giving his drawing a strong quality of spatial definition. At the same time he used very well observed gesture and pose to establish the atmosphere of his theme.
Many of his finest works both in the 20?s and 30?s, and in his late period when his control of style remained clear and constant, have their root in his observation of the way of life of the city. This study of people in a cheap bar shows clearly the unique and personal strength of his work, and especially of his etching, probably the most admired medium in his work. |
