Forain was one of the most gifted and individual French draughtsmen of the period around the turn of the century. Also a painter he was perhaps at his finest in his drawings and pastels, as well as in his etchings and his chalk-drawn lithographs, as here. He was an artist who had an exceptional eye for expressive gesture and social situation. He observed the mannerisms and movements of people with an uncanny skill and an often bitingly satirical eye. Nowhere were his gifts put to more effective use than in his favourite studies of the legal profession at work

This study of the extravagant gestures of an advocate as he sums up the pleadings in his case is a typical example of the inspiration of his drawing style.
