The bold forms and extremely rich brilliant colours in this composition make it an outstandingly striking example of the height of Sonia Delaunay?s work in lithography in the period around the end of the 1960?s.
It was in the years from the end of the 1950?s that Delaunay became particularly interested in using colour lithography as a medium. She found that with post-war developments in the technology of inks she was able to achieve a brilliance and density of colour which earlier had not been possible. At the same time the freedom of the medium to create areas of absolutely flat colour but inter-laid with each other in a manner which resembles collage gave a new stimulus to the colour ?structures? which had been the heart of her work since her development of ?Orphism? with her husband Robert Delaunay in the 1920?s. In her best colour lithographs the areas of colour create changing planes and depths in a manner which is very visually exciting. |
