?Mother and Child in front of Notre Dame? was one of the first lithographs in colour that Chagall drew after his return to France from New York following the end of the War. It is also one of his first works to celebrate his love affair with Paris, which he had come to see as his adoptive home. He drew it in 1952 as a part of a series under the title of ?Vision of Paris?. The series consisted of three lithographs in colour and four in black ink only. They were issued first in a hand-printed edition of 75 impressions, signed and numbered as here, and then the same stones were used for the unsigned edition issued for ?Verve?.

In this lithograph the style is absolutely typical of Chagall?s work in the early 1950?s. Drawing in thin but strong line in lithographic pen is combined with sweeps of colour handled in chalk. The sense of lyrical movement, and the powerful feeling of happiness expressed through colour which Chagall found whilst working on lithography at the Mourlot studio at this time, are very clearly to be felt in the image.
