During the late 1960's Vasarely began to experiment with the idea of translating his use of optical multi-plane images, created through juxtaposed geometric arrangements of colour, into actual three dimensional 'sculture-plaques'. His first works in this form were cool arrangements of geometric shapes in the form of cut wood blocks made around 1967 to 1969. After experimenting with moulded plastic reliefs, which were not successful because the forms could not be made 'sharp-edged' enough, in the mid 1970's he turned to the idea of using an overall geometric-shaped free-standing block onto which the optical colour patterns would be screened on both sides. Gee 1, above is a very fine example of this fascinating and important aspect of his art.
The overall form is a hexagon; the two main faces are then overprinted with the geometric pattern (in blues, greens, purples and reds) in such a way that other multidimensional forms appear optically to exist within the space and volume of the block. The result is a brilliantly effective interplay of planes and surfaces with a powerful sculptural presence.
This 'sculpture plaque' is in exceptionally fine condition as the previous owner never removed it from its original packing box or put it on display.
