The dominant theme of Müller's work was studies of the nude, or of gypsy figures, in a wild landscape setting.

Müller joined the Brücke circle of Kirchner, Schmidt-Rottluff, Heckel and Pechstein in 1910. He was drawn into their aesthetic milieu by their interest in themes of the nude in the open air or the open-air life. There was a strong artistic, and later social, interest in Germany in the hedonism and emotional element of the open-air figure study, and the Brücke painters used to make frequent trips to the countryside, or the sea, where they would bathe naked and paint themes of bathing.
