Girl with a Fan is one of the scarcest of the small lithographs drawn by Ranson for the seminal review: La Revue Blanche. It was only issued in the Revue itself, never in the separate album, and it would appear that the edition of this issue of the Revue was either much smaller than later, or that a large part of the issue was never sold and lost. Certainly this lithograph is very uncommon.

Ranson was one of the founders of The Nabis group, along with his fellow students at the Académie Julian: Bonnard, Vuillard, Denis, Roussel etc. Calling themselves The Prophets they used to meet at Ranson's studio to discuss their use of Symbolist form and pattern. This study, certainly of Ranson's wife who was a favourite model for all the group, shows to the full how they used rhythmic contour, patterns of shape and light and elongation of perspective to achieve their emotional impact of image.
