Le Marché aux Legumes is one of the most famous etchings in Pissarro's graphic oeuvre. Like the similar large-scale Marché de Volailles it reveals the full extent of his masterly and inventive technique in etching. A structure in etched line is interwoven with textures created through aquatint tone, scraping, burnisher work and patterns of parallel line shading. It creates a sense of surface and light which is full of movement, capturing the full impressionist concept of the 'sensation of a moment' linked to the theme of modern everyday realism.
The earlier editions of this etching had been restricted to 49 impressions only; as a result the plate printed extremely well in this issue for Delteil. |
