Frottage - or creating images by taking rubbings off chosen textural surfaces - was one of Ernst?s great contributions to Surrealist image-making. Through his friendship with the photographer (and painter) Man Ray Ernst extended the idea of his frottage technique into images made by combining textural rubbing with line-making on light-sensitised paper. The resultant images which as here often have a ?negative white line on black? effect are amongst Ernst?s most creative prints. The series of Mr Knife and Miss Fork is one of his most famous works in this style. |
